teleute12 made a remark to the effect that Brokeback Mountain wasn't in Alabama yet because no one here wanted to see it, and I had to actually walk away from the computer for a while. (Brokeback Mountain is now here, at the Rave in Vestavia Hills, and they're selling out all their showings so crazy fast I haven't been able to get a ticket yet.)
My grandfather is over seventy years old. He was born to dirt-poor Alabama farmers (I come from a loooong line of dirt-poor farmers on both sides of the equation). He has spent most of his life within a three-county radius, except for his tour of duty in the Army. He has been known to call African-Americans by the n-word. You would expect this man to be a vehement religio-social conservative with a W sticker on the back of his pickup truck, right?
He voted for Kerry.
He hates the idea of denying anyone their rights. His take on the issue of gay marriage is basically the same as mine: If you don't want to have a gay marriage, don't have one, but don't stand in the way of other peoples' rights and happiness.
Stop judging books by their covers.
