So, okay, I'm having an Oscars-watching party. It will (hopefully, if everyone shows up) be great. There will be little cheesy gift bags with, like, dollar sunglasses. And a ballot for the winners, and whoever gets the most right wins movie tickets.

But there is the small question of food. I want to have desserts and appetizery things, but I don't know what exactly there should be. Please advise.

Pigs in a blanket!

I think you should have non-hoity toity food to go with your dollar gift bags. It'd be awesome.

But yeah, PIB is all I could come up with right now. Ohhh, cheese and crackers, of course (on toothpicks!). And instead of wine have grape juice.

I'll let you know if anything else comes to me.

What about a really great dip? I think a hearty dip is always fun party food. Something like seven-layer, or artichoke. Three of the five nominees are at least partly set in the fifties/early sixties. Maybe some retro food? Little meatballs on toothpicks? I like the pigs in a blanket if you go with that.

For desert, do you like to bake? Because I hate it, so I buy tiny already prepared graham cracker crusts and make one portion key lime and chocolate pies. Instead of meringue, I use whipped cream for a topping and just shave either chocolate or lime rind on top. Key lime is very easy to make, and homemade chocolate filling isn't hard.

Okay, here's a start -- those are all of the appetizery things and desserts I made for my birthday party (all finger foods, including pigs in a blanket!). Also, something I didn't make but thought about was brie baked in puff pastry, but which is super easy (just get a little round of brie, some frozen puff pastry, roll it out, and wrap around and bake for about an hour until melty -- you can carmelize some onions first and put on top of the brie before wrapping, or apricot jam, etc). I also have a good recipe for cheese straws, or spinach and feta turnovers, and spinach dip (Allie's right, dip is always a great thing, with either chips or veggies or bread) either warm or cold. Let me know if you want any of those, or have any vague ideas that you want me to brainstorm on.
