I think I got a few hours of sleep in the tossing and turning today, but not sure. Other than that, I haven't slept since, um, Friday.

SHOOT ME NOW.

So. BSG. I'm not even going to address "Maelstrom" right now, except to say there will be spoilers after a fashion under the cut. This has been bothering me for a few days.

We've been told twelve repeatedly, right? Off the top of my head, we know about Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Athena, and now Aurora, and that makes seven.

Which is the following: If I was making a pantheon based on the Greek gods, I would think the following, along with some of those listed above, would be included: Hestia, Ares, Poseidon, Hermes, Hades, Demeter, Hephaistos. That's seven. And the inclusion of Helios can arguably be inferred from Helo's callsign, though he may have been given it for another reason, or Helios could be an aspect of Apollo in Colonial reckoning (Helios Apollo, as in Greek reckoning he was Phoebus Apollo, bringer of light)--which would make the dynamic between Helo and Lee very interesting indeed. If Helios is a distinct Lord of Kobol, that makes fifteen.

Which three of the second category are not Lords of Kobol? Have I missed someone? Is one of them (Hades, perhaps?) the unnamed god of the legend? Or the God of the Cylons? Why would Aurora, a minor goddess of the dawn, be included in the Twelve Lords to the exclusion of one of the major deities in the second group? And why is Starbuck, who has previously been shown to worship Artemis as her patron, suddenly be so concerned about her? Why do all the ones we know about except Zeus and Hera begin with A? What's going on here?

Apologies for incoherence, it's almost 5 AM and, as mentioned before, I haven't really slept in about three days.

The only thing I can figure was the bright, overwhelming white light (of dawn?) that washed over Kara's Viper as she disappeared into the aether. There was also all her talk about a new beginning. For Kara, it might be a good thing. =)

All I know is that I was kinda struck by the very John Sheridan-ness of the moment -- the hero launching themselves into the abyss, finding out what waits between life and death. "The man in the middle is waiting" ring a bell, anyone?

I have to admit that I was struck by how little this episode affected me. While Sheridan's life after death was pivotal to plot progression, I don't feel like "Maelstrom" really offered a lot to the growing mythology. I'm sure it will eventually. For now, I was just kinda...eh. I was moved, however, by Lee and Adama's reactions. It will be more interesting, I think, to see the fall out than the actual episode was.

Don't get me wrong -- I like Kara. But I didn't particularly care for this one. ::shrugs:: Then again, I'll be really laughing my @$$ off if she turns out to be like Aurora re-incarnate or something.

Sorry, I thought I responded to this an age and a half ago!

My real concern is the inclusion of Aurora in the pantheon. There are twelve Lords of Kobol. We've been told repeatedly there are twelve. There were a lot more than twelve gods in the Greek pantheon, but there were only twelve Olympian gods. I had been assuming a 1:1 translation with the possible substitution of Hades for, say, Poseidon (since the Colonials are spacefaring and probably don't worry that much about the sea) until Aurora was featured in this episode. She's a minor goddess. What's she doing there instead of Demeter or someone?
