GUYS, why why WHY does everyone think that the fact that every guy at Forks High wants to date Bella Swan and every girl wants to be her BFF is indicative of A) some great beauty she is unaware of or B)her utter (and undeniable) Mary Sue-ness?

Hello? SHE'S THE SHERIFF'S DAUGHTER. She walked into that school and EVERY KID THERE saw the way to no more speeding tickets. And its name was Beautiful freakin' Swan.

I grew up in a small town and went to school with the local traffic cop's daughter. Trust me on this one. ("Hi, Mr. H! I had a doctor's appointment and now I'm late for band practice, you know, Jeanette's already there, yeah, you know how Mr. E. is when we're late--oh a warning? Thank you so much!")

*returns to sweatshopping out yet another paper, god*

Speaking as the daughter of a police officer? Yeah, I can see that. I know of one or two friends that managed to get out of tickets when they were stopped by my dad.

Of course that only worked when dad remembered them. He was horrible with faces and names. But usually a "Hi Mr. C! I'm so and so. I go to school with Chris" worked.

Heh, yeah, it's questionable whether it would have worked for them (and if one of the guys in particular ever became That Guy Who Broke the Sheriff's Baby Girl's Heart, look out) but I bet they were hopeful.

And [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo has a much more cogent explanation of why this is a bad book than we could ever do, here.

It also explained to me the sheer vitriol of the readers on Lamb & Lion, feeling all betraaaayed. They were reading a Romance novel series, which is what she was writing... and then she went all scifi/horror/anthro on them, to the cries of "say what?"
