I HAVE FANTASTIC NEWS.

And a problem.

First, the fantastic news: I'll be doing an internship in DC this summer. My squee is freaking hypersonic.

Now, the problem: I need to find an apartment in the Washington, DC area. I'll be there for three months and I'll be making, um, not a lot. Intern pay. My parents have said they'll help me out, but the rents of most of the places I'm seeing on Craigslist are more than I'll be paid, never mind utilities and, like, food, and then there's the occasional place I could afford which actually makes me wary because they seem okay but I don't know anything about the area to know where the eff these places are and whether they're safe or anything. The service I was recommended which provides housing to interns has more rules than my freshman dorm. I am 24. If I want to have alcohol in my home I will damn well have alcohol in my home

So, uh, I don't know. I don't know anything. I don't even know what I'm saying, really, I'm actually kind of celebretorially drunk right now. Uh. Housing. Short-term. DC area. Help me!

Craigslist. Group home. Start emailing people asap. Stay in Northwest (for the most part). Send an email about any place that sounds good on Craigslist, then ask your friendslist about the address!

And congrats!

All of this.

Congrats!

*points up* What they said. Northwest, or Arlington/Alexandria, or Bethesda. Unless you're bringing your car, you want to ask if it's within half a mile of Metro, because people will fudge on "walking distance."

GOOD LUCK.

Ah, one thing. You don't necessarily have to stay in NW. It depends on where your internship is, for one thing. Arlington and Alexandria and Bethesda can be super far from places in DC even if it is on the subway. So definitely ask us about the addresses.

THAT IS AWESOME!

For housing? Look for fellow interns, both in and out of college. Tons of students descend on the DC area for summer internships. They all need somewhere to live.

I can actually ask a couple of my friends who are part of that crowd if they have any useful advice if you'd like?

SO COOL. Totally time to hit up your RP friends and associates in DC/NoVa who know the area so they can point you in the right direction. Come to the rescue, RP friends! Come to the rescue!

Have you been watching the playoffs? Wings first game is tomorrow! Just remember to turn it off if they're not scoring to make them score. You remember how it goes :D

Oooh, congrats!

Sadly, for temp housing in the area, I'm not very sure. The only person I know who interned in the area lived in the special housing for Congressional interns, which also had more rules than it bloody well needed.

But yay, DC internship! You'll love the area. It's awesome.

YAY! GO TEAM YOU! As a clueless foreigner, I can only repeat [livejournal.com profile] coltsbane's advice about poking RP peoples. Man, what did we do for stuff like this before the internets?

YAY! In addition to Craigslist, also check in at the various universities--I think I remember that American University would rent out their dorm rooms when the students went home for the summer, so Georgetown, Catholic, and GW might do the same thing.

Most places labeled as Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan are good places to be. Capitol Hill has some sketchier areas, and the upper Northwest is where ambassadors live :). Southeast is really the only section to absolutely skip. Southwest is Georgetown, and therefore ridonkulously expensive.

If you expand your search into the burbs, Bethesda is good, and so is Alexandria. The Metro is awesome for getting in and out of town, but double check on Google maps if they are saying that it's in walking distance. Because the Metro is such a draw, it gets mentioned in ads a lot but people will say its walking distance even if it's, like, 2 miles away.

*chases away the teal deer*
