Tales From Academia (and other stuff)
Oct. 11th, 2005 08:17 pm1. Technology hates me. This is not news. Today, I was at one of the off-campus places that takes college ID-card-cash for lunch, with Cat and TR. They both paid without incident, but my card came back 'invalid.' Three times. Finally, TR paid for my lunch.
After my afternoon class, I went to the ID-card office to find out what was going on and get it fixed, because half my life (not to mention a not-insignificant sum of money) is on that card. They scanned it and said, "Huh, that's weird."
Besides our student ID numbers, the cards have registration codes. I don't know what these do, but it was explained to me that the codes run 1-9. That's it. There are no other codes. There are no double digit codes. My card's registration code...is 42.
2. There was some kind of, I don't know, festival of cotton in front of the student services building today. I got a free laundry bag, a sample of Tide, and a picture frame, which I promptly left in TR's car. My bad.
3. Over lunch, Cat and I drew a diagram of Wuthering Heights, which we then drew on the board before the professor came in. She loved it so much she left it on the board, even though we had a quiz, and two of the answers were included in the diagram. I think the effect was better in two handwritings (Cat has very pretty handwriting; I...don't), but here's my copy:
( It's about whiny people! )
4. Vivian Vande Velde has a new book out. The Book of Mordred. Y'know, I used to have a lot of respect for VVV. Her vampires and dragons and whatnot were bastions of my early-teen reading. But I read the book jacket of this one, and like Laurell K. Hamilton and Anne Rice before her, VVV has jumped the shark. Mordred is painted as some kind of dark hero or something, and I'm sorry, but when your main Arthurian heroine is named Alayna and your secondary heroine is Keira (Hey, everybody remember who played Guinevere in the movie? I'm just saying.)...you need to do a rewrite immediately.
5. I got George a cat harness. He hates me forever now, though when I get a leash and let him actually go outside, I think his hatred may subside.
