As you know, I occasionally talk about hockey here. Usually, it doesn't make much sense to anyone but me, and you all ignore it as is your due. This time, I'd like you to pay attention, because...

This time, it's this. Todd Bertuzzi sucker-punched Steve Moore. Moore is out the rest of the season/possibly forever with a broken vertebrae. Did you all read that? He broke his neck. Now, from the video I've seen (which is up for viewing on the main NHL page), I don't think it was the hit that did it, even though it was at an odd angle and Bertuzzi's a really big guy (245 pounds). I think it was the fall to the ice. Remember, Bertuzzi's a really big guy. And Moore fell at a really weird angle, with Bertuzzi on top of him.

A lot of people are screaming for Bertuzzi's blood. The police are investigating, considering pressing assault chargest, I think. Words like 'one year suspension' and 'banned for life' have been tossed around, and then there's the whole debate on whether this would have happened if the NHL didn't have the instigator rule. It's this huge, complex thing.

But for me, what it boils down to is...Jesus fucking Christ.

I'm not a hockey fan, but I would think most people associate fighting with hockey (even if that's bad). It's not like this was some random incident. I'm really surprised everyone is so up in arms about it.

People do associate fighting with hockey. It's a big part of the game, and it's expected. But not like this. The fighters are expected to have some form of honor. Moore had apparently been involved in a fight earlier in the first period, so by the traditional fighter's code, he was done for the game. And hits from behind like that are seen as really, really badwrong.

This wasn't even a fight. This was a sucker punch. And it certainly wasn't a random incident. Bertuzzi is big, he's mean as hell,, and he holds grudges like nobody's business. He's caused some fairly serious injuries before. But never anything like this.

I think a lot of the reaction is, "I mean, it's...he broke his fucking neck!" I've never heard of that happening before. Clearly, it's pretty serious.

Ah, okay. See, I had no idea about the fighter's code.
That's crazy. The incident, not the code.
