So, I love Hughes. I know, I was meant to love Hughes. I was told to love Hughes, and that I would love Hughes, and that if I did not love Hughes then I needed to get the hell out of the fandom before I was lynched and quite frankly y'all were more than a little scary about the whole loving Hughes thing.

But. I love Hughes. He's kinda ninja. A sappy ninja, but ninja nonetheless.

I love Roy, too, manipulative bastard that he is.

And I love Edward, because I have a thing for semi-murderous blonds (and oh my God, I'm old enough now that fancying him is pervy), and I absolutely adore Al.

So I'm hooked. I couldn't honestly tell you half of what happened in tonight's episode, because I spent most of it flailing with glee and OMG SO MUCH LOVE FOR HUGHES. It was a train job, I got that much.

Now, get ready for total geekitude, and feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I've been told FMA takes place in Amestris, an area corresponding to Germany in...what is it, 1910? I'm not sure I buy this. I can explain.

I assume: Their world is our world, only alchemy worked, which would obviously change the course of history since...what, thirteen hundred or so? Since alchemy research was pretty centered in Germany, Germany became the new world power, possibly merging with France and creating a great big Alsace-Lorraine type country.

Which was my initial theory; Alsace-Lorraine. It makes sense--a lot of the names are French-ish--Edward is of Old English origin and Alphonse is German, but they're both more likely to be used in France than Germany, I believe. And 'Roy' is solidly French. For 'king' as a matter of fact. Rockbell and Hughes are pretty English, but then maybe Alchemic Germany conquered England, and 'Maes' was no fucking help--ran it through Google and got people from Amsterdam, Belgium, and Wales. 'Trisha' I can only assume came from 'Patricia', which is Latin and therefore wide-spread, and Hohenheim...well, German. Elric, it turns out, is an actual German last name. So I thought, okay, France and Germany merged and the new central area is Alsace-Lorraine.

Except for two things. One: That desert, which...I believe they border? There are no deserts in Europe. Two: Roy's last name. 'Mustang' didn't come into being as a word until after the Spanish arrived in America, and what the fuck would a family in the Germany area be doing with an American word as their last name?

So, my theory is, they're in North America. I think the desert may be east, which throws me like whoa, but work with me here. There's a desert in North America, which there isn't in Europe, and Roy has a thoroughly American last name--if such an entity were to exist--and Asian features. Well, he looks Asian to me. I could be wrong, anime's not terribly helpful in that regard...but anyway. It screams 'immigrant name' to me, if German-American had a Staten Island.

Telly says the military's last names are taken from aircraft. I'm not sure whether this throws a wrench in my theory or not, since the only two military I used in my names sample were Hughes and Mustang. Okay, so a lot of my theory hinges on Mustang, but...I stand by my geocentricism.

Anyway. That's my theory. Feel free to smack this newbie down.
